Vacation in Lübeck: Insider tips & excursions to the Baltic Sea

Lübeck is known as the city of marzipan, but this charming Hanseatic city has so much more to offer. As a native from Lübeck, who grew up here and returned after 13 years in Spain, Munich, and Vienna, I know every corner of this beautiful city. With its pleasant size (220,000 inhabitants), mix of historic old town charm, rich culture, beautiful natural surroundings, and proximity to the beach, Lübeck is the perfect place to explore. I can’t imagine ever leaving again. Here’s my insider guide to Lübeck’s highlights and hidden gems.

Must-Sees in Lübeck: Circle the Old Town island

Lübeck impresses with unique attractions that reflect its historic charm and versatility. A tour around the Old Town island, surrounded by the Trave River, takes you to all the highlights with a few detours along the way. Whether on foot, by bike, or with a “Boat-Now” rental, the views are stunning in every season.

The City of Seven Spires

Lübeck is also called the “City of Seven Spires.” These spires are found on the city’s iconic churches: St. Mary’s (2 spires), St. Jakobi (1 spire), St. Peter’s (1 spire), St. Aegidien (1 spire), and the Lübeck Cathedral (2 spires = 7 spires total). Together, they shape Lübeck’s skyline and stand as a testament to medieval architectural brilliance.

Holstentor

This iconic medieval gate is Lübeck’s symbol and a must-visit. It’s a great photo spot and the perfect starting point for exploring the Old Town.

Town Hall and Market Square

Lübeck’s Town Hall is a masterpiece of Brick Gothic architecture and, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful and oldest town halls in Germany. The Market Square is the heart of the Old Town, especially magical during the Christmas market season.

Petriturm

For breathtaking views of Lübeck, take the elevator up St. Petri tower (€5). The panoramic view showcases Lübeck’s spires and rooftops in all their glory – particularly stunning when covered in snow and with clear sky.

European Hansemuseum

Blick vom Hansemuseum Lübeck

This relatively new museum tells the story of the Hanseatic League and impresses with its modern architecture. Don’t miss the rooftop terrace, which offers fantastic sunset views.

Museum Harbour

Historic ships gently sway in the museum harbor, reflecting Lübeck’s rich maritime heritage. It’s a wonderful spot for a stroll and some photos.

Niederegger Museum

Lübeck’s famous Niederegger marzipan makes the perfect souvenir. The museum on the 3rd floor features life-sized marzipan sculptures and offers fascinating insights into the history of this sweet treat. Be sure to take a peek into the shop windows, where you’ll find intricately crafted marzipan figures, fairy tale scenes, landscapes, and famous landmarks from Lübeck and around the world. These displays change regularly, making them a must-see during a walk through Breite Straße.

House of Willy Brandt

The birthplace of former Chancellor Willy Brandt is now a museum that highlights his life and political legacy.

House of Buddenbrooks

This museum, dedicated to Lübeck’s famous literary brothers Thomas and Heinrich Mann, transports visitors back to the Lübeck of the 19th century.

Heiligen-Geist-Hospital

One of Europe’s oldest social institutions and a stunning example of Brick Gothic architecture. During Christmas, its artisan market is a must-see.

Hüxstraße and Fleischhauerstraße

These charming cobblestone streets offer a unique shopping experience with small boutiques and cozy cafés.

Drägerpark und Falkenwiese

Locals love to relax and swim in the refreshing waters of the Wakenitz River here – no matter the season!

Gänge-Viertel (Alleyways)

Lübeck’s alleys, or “Gänge,” are a unique feature of the Old Town and a true highlight that sets the city apart. Originally built in the Middle Ages to create housing for the growing population, these hidden passages now reveal romantic courtyards, winding pathways, and historic homes.

The alleys are numbered, and wandering through them feels like stepping into a secret world of brick and timber. Some are so narrow that they evoke a sense of entering a hidden realm. Summer is an especially charming time to visit, with small gardens and courtyards in full bloom. But beware – you may need to duck your head!

  • Hellgrüner Gang (No. 1): One of the narrowest and most charming alleys.
  • Dunkelgrüner Gang (No. 2): Almost inconspicuous but typical of Lübeck’s hidden passageways.
  • Hinter den Kohlen: Among the narrowest alleys, it feels like a secret pathway.
  • Fischergrube: Known for picturesque alleys connecting streets and courtyards.
  • Engelswisch: A street lined with several charming alleys.
  • Marlesgrube: A hotspot for alleyways near Obertrave, where many connect, offering glimpses into Lübeck’s past life.

Best Baltic Sea Beaches

These are my personal favourite beaches:

Travemünde

  • Distance: 20 minutes
  • Target Audience: Retirees
  • Highlight: For those who enjoy a bit of hiking, Travemünde offers the perfect setting. My personal highlight is the 10 km trail along the Brodtener Ufer to Niendorf – an ideal route for a seaside walk with a stop at Café Hermannshöhe. The circular route takes you along the beach on the way there and back along the cliffs, offering spectacular views. Alternatively, you can take a ferry across to the Priwall peninsula. The newly built promenade features a variety of chic restaurants and shops. This beach is also easily accessible by train.

Timmendorfer Strand

  • Distance: 20 minutes
  • Target Audience: Those who love to see and be seen
  • Highlight: Timmendorfer Strand has earned its reputation as a place to show off – from designer handbags to luxury cars parked by the beach. It features beach volleyball tournaments, a pristine promenade, and upscale cafés.

Scharbeutz

  • Distance: 20 minutes

Grömitz

  • Distance: 30 minutes
  • Target Audience: Families with children, dog owners, and beachgoers looking to enjoy a classic Baltic Sea experience with plenty of amenities.
  • Highlight: A vast, fine white sand beach stretches for kilometers, featuring a dedicated dog-friendly section. The picturesque pier is perfect for a walk. Another highlight is the “Ostsee in Flammen” fireworks event on the last Friday of August.

Barendorf

  • Distance: 45 minutes
  • Target Audience: Nature lovers, those seeking tranquility, and romantics preferring a remote, unspoiled beach.
  • Highlight: This quiet, natural beach is ideal for peaceful moments and unforgettable sunsets over the Baltic Sea.

Fehmarn

  • Distance: 1 hour
  • Target Audience: Active travelers, water sports enthusiasts (especially kite surfers and windsurfers), and families looking for a mix of beach and activities.
  • Highlight: The island offers a variety of beaches – from lively to serene – as well as activities like kite surfing, birdwatching, and excellent fish restaurants.

Excursions around Lübeck

Hamburg

The bustling city of Hamburg is just 45 minutes away by train and offers countless attractions. Whether it’s a stroll through the historic Speicherstadt, shopping in the city center, a walk along the Landungsbrücken, or partying on the Reeperbahn – Hamburg makes for an exciting day trip for everyone.

Ratzeburg

The idyllic town of Ratzeburg is nestled between four lakes and lies just 30 minutes from Lübeck. A walk along the lake or a boat tour on its calm waters makes for a relaxing nature escape. Don’t miss the impressive Romanesque Ratzeburg Cathedral, a true gem of the region.

Plön

Plön charms visitors with its location amidst the rolling hills and sparkling lakes of Holstein Switzerland. The Great Plön Lake is perfect for canoe tours reaching all the way to Kiel, peaceful walks, or simply unwinding by the water. Don’t forget to visit Plön Castle, which majestically overlooks the town and completes the trip with its historic splendor.
